Turning one is a BIG deal, and a cake smash session is a wonderful way to celebrate your baby turning one! As you know, I love simple, and I love neutrals, and I also love planning these sessions. There are so many different options within the simple realm that can make your babies session super special. For instance, I love decorating girl cake smash sessions with fresh florals and pops or fresh greenery for boys is a great option too!
For this cake smash session, in particular, we decided on a hunter theme. This little boy loved playing with his toy animals, dancing them on the cake, putting them in his mouth, and feeling the cake and frosting covered toys in his hands.
I photographed this sweet little man’s newborn photos and when saw his red hair I fell in love. I couldn’t wait for his cake smash. It’s funny how some babies are born with a certain color hair and eyes and then they change over the course of the year… but this little boy kept his dreamy red hair! Isn’t he adorable?!
Cake smash sessions start with a few photos of your little one in a custom-made outfit from my prop closet. This gives the baby time to get used to the environment, all while mom and dad interact with them, right by their side, sing songs, play peek a boo and get lots of giggles.
Then it’s show time! The cake comes out, and we change the birthday baby into their cake smash outfit for the big finale. Some babies dig right in, while others take their time and dance around it, sometimes literally, as we listen to music, play games and have fun celebrating their personalities that have blossomed over the year, all while capturing these priceless moments.
This little one took his time to warm up to the idea of the cake. He explored the way it felt in his hands, took a few bites and then found the chocolate sticks. He LOVED the chocolate sticks, those kept him occupied for quite a while. And just look at the photos aren’t they precious?
Clean up is always fun. Mom usually gets just as messy as baby, so plan to wear something you don’t mind getting messy and bring a change of clothes if you wish. A great way to end the session is an add on mommy and me milk bath or a baby milk or bubble bath session to clean baby off and capture one of babies favorite times.. bath time!
